Please check your student’s backpack for the Second homework assignment of the year.  It is the same homework, I shared with parents at BTS night. You will see the black math workbook inside the folder, please decide with your child where it will be kept.  Remember the workbook stays home and just the assigned pages get ripped out.  Be sure to put names on the top of the math pages.  Math pages have not been assigned as yet but will be in the next few weeks. You will also find your student’s homework assignment.  The homework assignment is also tucked inside the first flap.  The first grade team all have the same homework, so network , ask friends, ask me if anything is unclear.

The homework Blue laminated folder always comes home on Monday evening and is to be returned by Friday morning.  Help your child establish a routine of when to do homework and where.  Be sure to put the folder and writing with reading list all together in the backpack the night before. All students will be reminded to check their backpacks several times on Friday.

Be sure to include their nightly reading list for the week, it is the form on the back of the homework sheet. I do keep track of the reading minutes and for every hour of reading ,your child will earn a gumball sticker for their gumball machine. The reading minutes are also tabulated so we can help our “Read to Feed”: Program sponsored by our awesome Librarian, Mrs. Cameron. So read, read, read!

Please plan on sitting side by side with your student and remember we don’t worry about spelling mistakes in the beginning. We want to encourage every student to write what they know , try to sound out the beginning and ending of the word and underline the words they aren’t sure how to spell and move on.   We learn from their mistakes and can coach them accordingly.Encourage and phraise alot, let your child know how proud of them you are and be sure they have included a colored picture to match what they have written. Have your student always write the short date on the very top of the page. The homework in the first few weeks of school and continuing will be a written  response to the books they are reading . Remember, the time we spend  nowdeveloping good homework habits  will pay off later.  When you receive the next week”s homework, be sure to review the previous weeks teacher comments.

Students have been taught the expectations in drawing and printing that I enforce in the classroom.   I encourage parents to enforce  the same standards in their child’s homework.  1.)Always color in the same direction. 2).Try to use at least 6 colors.  3).No whitespace left uncolored. 4.) Put details in their drawing and coloring. 5.) Always try to do their best. 6.) Be proud to turn in their best.

Also, look for a copy of your student’s behavior contract  to come home in the blue and white El Morro  folders every Friday. Please return the Behavior Contract in theBlue and white  folder with any comments or questions you have . The blue and White El Morro folders are due back on  Monday, so I can reload them with the student’s work. .  I read them all and return the folder the following Monday.  Let me know your feedback, this is something new and hopefully improved.
